about
Vision
All people working together to protect our earth, one another, and thus ourselves.
Mission
- To help the earth survive and thrive, and ensure that its inhabitants are treated humanely and fairly;
- To fund and help design programs that promote the health and well-being of the earth through mindful stewardship, and programs that promote the right of all people to liberty, freedom from want, and the pursuit of happiness.
- The Coleman Foundation will fund programs of the highest quality and integrity, and is willing to work with start-up programs that we have reason believe will grow and make significant contributions to the vision of the foundation. The Foundation does not wish to fund programs that can easily find other sources of funds, and will look favorably upon programs whose primary commitment is to issues rather than institutions;
- In August, 2011, the Board determined that to the extent possible its dollars should be spent funding grassroots programs that address what we believe to be the most urgent issue of our time, global climate change. We have seen how much good can be done with small targeted grassroots grants. This is consistent with the foundation's move over the past period of time towards more grassroots funding. Most of the growth in environmental funding has been in the bigger groups, and smaller NGOs have shown a decline in funding. There are also significant regional disparities that the foundation is helping to address as best it can.
- While the foundation does not accept unsolicited grant applications, a one-page letter of inquiry may be submitted to The Beatrice R. and Joseph A. Coleman Foundation, P.O.
